1918, Copenhagen. Caroline, a worker at a sewing factory, gets pregnant but instead of the better life she had hoped for, she is left on her own and without a job. With no other option, she takes a position as a wet nurse in a secret adoption agency, where the owner of a sweet shop helps poor mothers to give up their children out of wedlock. She soon learns the shocking truth about the babies' fates. The director continues the Bergmanian tradition of gender tensions in this gothic thriller based on true events that left an indelible mark on Danish history. Presented in the Cannes Directors' Fortnight with only his fourth feature-length film to date, Magnus von Horn has been selected for this year's Cannes Competition and has received favourable critical acclaim.
