European film festival network
Moving Images – Open Borders
Together with six other European film festivals, the European Film Festival Scanorama founded the cooperation network Moving Images – Open Borders.
Scanorama is part of a European film festival network
The member festivals focus above all on European cinema, nurturing its artistic value and regional distinctiveness.
Among the network’s key goals is mentoring new European film voices and talents, opening the door to the international film industry.
“The idea of this network had been floating around various meetings for several years, and seven very serious European film festivals took it to a new level. From the very beginning, Scanorama built its concept on the values of European cinema, emphasised the closeness of the Nordic and Baltic dimensions and thoughtfully expanded its pan-European context. This partnership gives us the opportunity not only to gain valuable experience, but also to share it with others.”
Gražina Arlickaitė, founder and artistic director of Scanorama
The founders of the Moving Images – Open Borders (MIOB) network aim to maintain an informal partnership rooted in community and in fostering creativity.
To strengthen the standing of European cinema in a global context, the network members share their experience of organising festivals, potential candidates for their film programmes and valuable contacts, and look for other opportunities for synergy.

International journalism lab at European film festivals
Together with the European film festival network, Scanorama invites Lithuanian journalists to take part in international film journalism labs taking place in Austria, Serbia, Germany and Lithuania.
About the programme
In response to the rapidly changing landscape of film journalism, the MIOB network aims to strengthen the voices of a new generation of critics and film journalists who bring a distinctive perspective, a fresh tone and contemporary ways of writing to the public sphere.
Selected participants are offered an exceptional professional experience free of charge – one-to-one mentoring with experienced cultural journalism experts and hands-on work at major European film festivals.
It is a chance not only to observe the film world up close, but also to reflect on it.
In collaboration with the international film platform Cineuropa, the young journalists will write film reviews, analytical articles and reports.
The best text selected by the jury will be published on the platform – in recognition of professional growth and creative potential.
-
Internal network training: hospitality and partnerships
Scanorama will host internal network training on hospitality, partnerships and sales.
These team trainings, initiated by the network, bring significant professional benefits. They deepen colleagues’ international experience by involving them in a shared process of transnational cooperation, and expand professional ties with European festivals of a similar scale and focus.
This focused model of exchanging knowledge and practice not only builds the team’s skills, but also ensures the organisation’s steady growth in an international context.
-
Sustainability commitments and the Green Charter
Every network member is committed to the principles of the Green Charter. This involves systematically applying data collection tools and methods, ensuring that consumption and environmental impact data are entered into the platform and analysed every year.
In 2024–2026, the network members are supported by a sustainability consultant. This support is part of a wider process of professionalising the network’s activities – bringing in external experts who help structure our commitments more clearly and maximise their impact.
The specialist’s work – including festival visits, analysis of their challenges and assessment of data from the Green Charter platform and forum – provides the expert grounding needed to better understand the festivals’ real needs, commitments and directions for improvement.
Consistently “mapping” the situation in this way makes it possible to set clear guidelines, define goals and develop possible principles for certification or labelling.
