Some of the seeds brought to Spain during colonial expeditions are still held in archives, catalogued simply as ‘Unnamed’. Through images of the archive and conversations with archivists, director Mauricio Freyre imagines their return home – to the southern coast of Peru, from which they were taken in the nineteenth century. Yet this homecoming is neither romantic nor hopeful: using plants as a metaphor, Freyre exposes the neocolonial structures still at work in South America.
