About the film

For Bill Evans, one of the most gifted American jazz pianists of the twentieth century, even a pause becomes part of the music. In 1961, his trio records two albums that will become landmarks of jazz. Ten days later, his bassist, close friend and musical soulmate Scott LaFaro is killed in a car crash. Shattered, Evans turns away from the piano and leaves New York, trying to outrun both his heroin addiction and the turmoil of his private life. Based on Owen Martell’s novel Intermission, the film follows him through dimly lit New York bars and suburban living rooms, conjuring him as a ghost in his own life. Moving between past and present, lucidity and intoxication, it reveals the melancholy depths of an artist’s inner world with subtlety and compassion. Grant Gee won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlinale.
