Egg! Egg! A Hardboiled Story

Ägget är löst! : En hårdkokt saga Director Hans Alfredson

About the film

Hans Alfredson’s film blends absurdist comedy with social satire, allowing everyday reality to tip into the grotesque and the darkly comic. It follows an eccentric family whose fortune rests on a lucrative but environmentally destructive factory producing implements from eggshells. When the tyrannical patriarch throws his son out of the family home following a misunderstanding, the young man seeks refuge in the wilderness. He eventually returns, determined to rebel against his father’s empire. The film unfolds as a fragmented narrative filled with unexpected situations and eccentric characters, exposing the absurdities of bureaucracy and power, as well as the ordinary individual’s helplessness in the face of both. Alfredson uses irony and a playful approach to reveal the illogical workings of society, deliberately dismantling conventional narrative logic along the way. Here, plot takes second place to atmosphere and a sharply critical view of modern life.

Director

Hans Alfredson

Hans Alfredson (1931–2017) was one of the most distinguished and versatile figures in

twentieth-century Swedish culture: a filmmaker, writer and comedian. Born in Malmö, he earned

a degree in literature and art history from Lund University. In the 1960s, together with his

colleague Tage Danielsson, he formed Hasse & Tage, one of Sweden’s best-known creative

partnerships, which had a lasting influence on the country’s tradition of cinematic satire and

comedy.

Alfredson’s films move between absurdist humour, biting satire and a deep social and moral

melancholy. They often explore humanism, the individual’s struggle against systems and the

boundary between good and evil, while their visual language is marked by poetic imagery and

highly inventive camerawork. In recognition of his contribution to Swedish cinema, Alfredson

received several Guldbagge Awards, Sweden’s leading film honours, including an Honorary

Guldbagge in 2013.
