About the film

“In Lebanon, contemporary history is not taught in schools,” declares the film’s opening title. How can a painful and fragmented history be told in a country without a national archive? Drawing on films, news reports, home movies and popular songs spanning the past seventy years, filmmaker Lana Daher explores the Lebanese collective consciousness, shaped equally by joy and grief. Images of the civil war give way to Israeli bombardments, while rituals of everyday life - weddings and domestic scenes - punctuate the political narrative. Poetically weaving together disparate media, Daher reconstructs the country’s memory. Making and watching films become acts of preserving its history.
