Interdisciplinary British artist Charlie Shackleton's film is a succession of fragments of feature films, selected on the sole criteria that none of the actors are no longer alive. The dead, briefly revived in the film, are likened to angels or ghosts, and the traces of their work suggest the impermanence of existence. The fragility of time also goes beyond the cinema screen: there is only one 35 mm print of this film, so each screening naturally contributes to the film's wear and tear and eventual deterioration. The film has now been screened nearly 60 times at film festivals and museums around the world.

Charlie Shackleton
Charlie Shackleton is a non-fiction filmmaker and artist based in London. He has previously written film reviews for The Guardian and Sight & Sound. His short films, Lasting Marks, Fish Story, Personal Truth and Copycat were screened at international festivals. In 2023, he made a 10-hour and 7-minute film in which a drying brick wall is filmed in one shot. After submitting the film to the British Censorship Board, he ordered the body to watch the whole film in protest against the length-based fees imposed on films. Afterlight premiered at the London Film Festival in 2021 and is still touring around the world.
