About the film

“The Life of Infamous Men” was the project for a book that never saw the light of day but for which Michel Foucault wrote a preface. He wanted to collect the written traces of peculiar lives whose uniqueness was considered scandalous and led to denunciations and legal condemnations. Inspired by this never written boook, the film tells a story of the fall of Mathurin Milan, who was put in Charenton hospital on August 31st, 1707 and convicted for infamy. It is a seemingly austere yet rich, fascinating and subtle work of fiction treading the line between social norms and human nature.
