About the film

"All these studies seem senseless to me now. They teach me how to work, but I don't get any answers to what really matters to me. So... I sit in sunshine and look at pigeons."

Barbara is desperately trying to find some value in her life but is weighed down by depression. She seeks solace in the church but instead is met by Gregory, an intellectual who seems to have an even worse opinion of life than she does. For a time she seems close to rescue by a married couple who seem to have found genuine value in life through each other. Ultimately they cannot save her from her own despair. Jonas Mekas is reflecting the feelings and thoughts of his generation faced with the moral perplexity of his times and creates a bitter lyric manifesto known as a most important film of the American „New Wave“.
