Helmer, a single farmer in his fifties, lives with his aged, bedridden father in the Dutch countryside. His working days are marked by the visits of milk collector Johan, a man of his own age for whom Helmer holds a secret fascination. One day Helmer decides to renovate the house, buying himself a new double bed and moving his father upstairs. His life gains even more momentum, when adolescent farmhand Henk comes to help him out.

Director
Nanouk Leopold
Nanouk Leopold was born in Rotterdam in 1968. She studied at the Netherlands Film and Television Academy and at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts. Her first feature film Floating Islands (2001) was selected for the Tiger Awards of the Rotterdam Film Festival. Her long-awaited follow up came in 2005 when she made Guernsey, which was selected for Une Quinzaine des Réalisateurs in the Cannes Film Festival. Her debut and three subsequent films (Guernsey, 2005; Wolfsbergen, 2007 and Brownian Movement, 2010) form a so-called feminine tetralogy. In 2011 Scanorama presented her films Wolfsbergen and Brownian Movement.
