About the film

“The story itself is nothing new, but it’s something I still have a great interest in. What’s exciting about working with something that’s been done before (the rape-revenge genre) is that you can really surprise an audience within the framework of something they’re familiar with. Audiences usually associate the rape-revenge genre with exploitation films. I wanted to take this genre and take away the two obvious main elements and just have this very intense “middle” between rape and revenge”, – says director Peter Strickland.

Peter Strickland was born in the UK in 1973. In 1992 he adapted Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” for an amateur theatre group. He has made numerous short films and was a guest at the Berlinale in 1997 with his film “Bubblegum”. In 1996 he and some friends founded an art project, “The Sonic Catering Band”, which made a name for itself with sound poetry and other entomological-acoustic excursions. “Katalin Varga” is his first feature film.
