About the film

After the crushing defeat of the French in the war against the Prussians, Napoleon III’s government collapses and society revoltes. A group of communists seize power and form the Paris Commune. The new government separates from the state and operates on Marx’s ideas. The Commune is soon expelled by French soldiers. In this film, Peter Watkins compares the present and the past - telling about historical events in a modern CNN reporting style.
